I am thinking of moving my winch back 10 inches to have the speedo clear the trailer bunks. It is an I/O and will have about
8 inches of the bottom unsupported any Ideas if this is a good mod.

It's a good way to put a hook in your bottom.

The concern would be the tounge weight, once you moved the winch / boat back. Weight should be about 10% of total trailer / boat weight. If you are currently balanced correct then moving it back would lighten tounge weight. You would then have to most likely move the axle(s) back to get to 10%.

Good Luck

What he is telling you is that the weight of the outdrive can exert enough downward pressure on the transom of your boat that it can, over time, cause the transom to migrate down. This will result in there being a "hook" or built in trim tab at the back edge of the hull bottom.

Although this takes time to occur, when it does it can be a large problem to repair.

So move the winch stand, but only just enough to allow the pick up tube to be clear of the bunk.

i had rollers on my trailer, but the boat hung off the trailer lights by 3 ft. It can easily over hang that much.

just as long as the trailer is not too back heavy. meaining the tounge will come off the ground easily. (but you should be able to pick the tounge up, with around 200 lbs of force)

Agree with the answer this will end up with a hook in your bottom, also, as mentioned throw off the balance of the trailer.

All I can say is WOW...that's a BIG speedo tube that needs 8" clearance!

You say you have an I/O but you are trying to clear the speedo pick up tube. Where is this the tube mounted on your boat that you need to move it on the trailer by 8 inches? Like others said that is going to change the balance of the boat load on the trailer and affect your launch and retrieve routine as well. Pictures would definitely help out with suggestions on how to fix your problem.

Very misleading, bowman.

Correct setup of trailer is covered well in this forum. It would be a good idea to follow that.

Why not just shorten the bunks so they come even with the stern of the boat? That way the balance stays unchanged and yet your pitot tube is safe from getting crunched.

All of the speedo pitot tubes I have seen are mounted off the back of the transom and no part go towards the bow.
Unless yours is something different, why do you you need an extra 8 inches?

Would it perhaps be easier to move the bunks further inboard or outboard?

8" won't matter, IMO. If you are concerned about it, prop up the transom while it's parked for long periods of time. It certainly won't affect anything while towing or other short-term use.
I've had a 17' with a 70hp OB with a foot or more of overhang for 22 years; no ill effects that I can discern. If it has a hook, I don't know it. That's all of the engine on the transom, and rollers. So wouldn't an I/O have most of the weight in the block, which is supported anyway?

While an unsupported transom can lead to a hooked bottom, it's not the weight of the outdrive that causes hooking; My outdrive weighs about 100 pounds. It's the weight of the engine that can cause a hook in your hull.
