Re: boat paint not good ??

You need to start sanding with wet 500, followed by wet 1000 sand paper. Once that is done, use liquid polishing compound. 3M has " heavy professional machine compound" that will be good to use.
After polish compound you will get a shine, but you will see swirl marks from the polish mashine. Good carnauba wax will get rid of swirl marks.
Good luck. Post back with your progress.

Sorry, forgot something... If you hear your paper starts making squicking noise, this means it needs water. Add a little dishwashing detergent to that water. Paper will need to be wet all the time. Do horizontal hand movements, NOT circular.
Keep pressure on the sand paper with the palm of your hand. This will insure even surface sanding. There is a sand paper with soft foam backing on it. It is designed for a polish machine. When I did my boat, I did not use polish machine, I did it by hand. I found that the "foam backed paper" was easier to hold.
Good luck.
Welcome to IBOATS :)

Not sure how much the foam backed sand paper is, but I have used and very good luck using either the thin foam used to line tool box drawers. You can also buy those dishwasher sponges that are rectangular, and same size as a sanding block. With the drawer liners, you can glue them to the block, and with the sponges, you can just place them in between your block and paper. I made "shake and shoot" paints shine like show room finsihes before using this method. But your definitley looking for alot of work to do a boat by hand.

Good Luck

Paint should be fully cured. I painted my boat with Interlux single part poly. On the can it said 24 hours, I waited 2 days before sanding.
It is a big job. Preparation of surface was the bigest job. If you took your time and effort on preparation before you painted, wet sending will be easy for you. :)
Results will be rewarding. Did you spray, or "rolled and brushed"?

I used "finger nail" paint cure test...
If you can leave a mark in the paint by pushing your finger nail into paint, it is not cured.
I did this on the surface below the waterline, this way if you do leave a mark, it still gets a coat of bottom paint.

Re: boat paint not good ??

sly36,
I am sorry, but those guns are good to paint fence around your yard and a door in your garage. That is why an electric one costs $75 vs. pro gun as high as $2k. On the other hand I have read of a few posts with people using electric guns and being very happy with final results.
PREPARATION OF SURFACE BEFORE YOU PAINT IS THE KEY !
A friend of mine is a "laquer man". He paints custom kitchen doors. He helped me a lot while my painting project. I did most of prep work, he did most of spraying. He came with his gun he uses to laquer wood doors. That is one impressive little thing. Size of a small canister houshold vacum cleaner, the mashine draws constant pressure.

Enough said...
back to your question:
You know, it all depends what you call enough. Do you want to get the finish as smooth as the painted car? Or would you be OK with somewhat rougher finish?
How many coats did you spray so far?

It is a big job to paint a boat.
It is either or issue... How far are you willing to go making this look ideal.
What was ideal to me was not good enough for a pro friend of mine, who knows all about paints. Boat turned out to look like it just came out of a mold and just got its coat of gelcoat.

Sly, it is your call what's enough. Post picture if you could.

Painting two part poly in humid conditions or late in the day when due could form before the paint has cured will produce a dull finish. It happened to me. I sanded and repainted in better weather conditions with no problems
