A close friend of mine just bought a used 16ft open bow runabout. He was very anxious to get it in the water and either used too small a ball or did not adjust hitch accordingly. To make matters worse, no tow chains.

He's pulling up GA. 400 (65 mph) and looks in his rear view mirror suprised to see the hitch about come through the back window of his SUV. The only thing connecting the trailer to the SUV is the wiring harness. He hits the gas and tugs the harness out, pulling the tounge back towards the ground. The boat then proceeded to pass him going 50-60mph slowly bouncing the tounge on the road as it passed.

The boat came back into his lane in front of him and slowly veered off the side of the hwy, eventually coming to a stop. No damage at all! He hooks it back up, adjusts the hitch and we enjoy the day on the lake. Some people have all the luck!

Re: Boat passes Tow Vehicle

I can assure you I did not post this story for effect. This is the Gods honest truth as told by him and his somewhat frantic wife when they arrived shortly thereafter.

I'm sure you'll find that would of, could of, should of, applies to every story on this board.

Typically "stupid human tricks" will either damage personal property or have the capacity to hurt or kill someone especially when related to boating. In this case however, no one or thing was injured in this incident. That's what makes it somewhat amusing. I said the guy was lucky, not smart.

I was with a friend in Florida, pulling his boat, and travelling about 6o in a 45 mph zone.

We got pulled over by the cops.

My idiot friend trys to explain to the cops that he was being tailgated by the boat. He would turn left, the boat would tun left, he would slow down, the boat would slow down. He would speed up the boat would speed up. He told the cop that he must have been caught when he was trying to out run the tailgating boat.

He had this casual southern manner of speaking where it all sounded so believable, and credible.

The cop is laughing his arse off, and decides not to give him a ticket.

Friend of mine got to the launch ramp and looked over his shoulder to reverse and lo & behold no boat.Hooked off on turnoff to launching area and rolled into bushes - no damage though.Pretty dumb considering boat & trailer weigh +- 1500kg(3000lbs)and he didn't notice the difference.
