i have a 1986 evinrude vro 4 cyl. 110 hp. it runs great except for one thing. every once and a while when i floor it in choppy water it feels like it loses traction and the motor revs up. sometimes to the point that i must put it in neutral then back in gear to get it to move. what's going on here? is there a transmission problem or is it cavatation?

motor placement

This might help...have you prop hub checked...more wght in the transom end sometimes helps also.

Re: boat peels out

Does it just happen in choppy waters? If so,from your description it may just be the prop ventilating. Can you trim the engine in and get it to bite? Are you trimmed way out when this occurs? How high is the engine mounted with respect to the anti-ventilation plate "above the prop" in relation to the boat bottom(pad)when viewed out of water on trailer with the engine trimmed level.?

Otherwise the other direction that could be a possibility is that the prop hub is spun. You can check that easy by simply marking two reference points, one on the center hub and one on the prop barrel and see if the marks stay aligned after a test run.A spun hub however ,will generally spin under load regardless of the water texture.

Re: boat peels out

I'm pretty sure it just happens in choppy water. The anti-ventilation plate is roughly 1 inch above the bottom of the boat. I don't have power trim. I have the pin on the second hole from the transom. One more hole and it would be trimmed all the way in. The boat gets on plane and rides right very quickly. I think if I move the pin to the first hole against the transom the boat will dive under the water while underway. The motor is on an 18 foot cobia center console. It goes 40mph with this motor on it. The motor is bolted to the transom as low as it will go without me having to cut the transom. Could my control cables be adjusted wrong? It goes in gear smoothly.

mark your prop and test it. would not think it is control cables. it won't hurt to try, moving the pin in or out one hole, as thats and easy adjustment. sometime you just have to tinker a little.
