My Monterey 190 has a lot of its pin-striping coming off all around the boat. I'm curious if this is something an auto body shop does or paint shop ? Anyone have experience with this ?

thanks....

Re: Boat pin-striping

Was this factory striping or something added by someone? The striping on my 1985 Larson seems good yet, even though I'll be removing it for a paint job. I've seen lots of more modern boats with factory striping coming off,I think they don't make it like they used to.
I'm sure a auto shop could put new on,but how about checking with the mfg,for replacement striping,or see what a local marina that has a paint/fiberglass shop can do.

Its all factory. Some of the pin-striping flows into the Monterey decals so I know it wasn't added. The boat is a 2002 so not sure if I could still get these same decals or not. I'm going to check into the boat wraps as well and possibly just starting over with all new decals.

Work at taking it off. Clean the area with alcohol (rubbing). Go to a paint store that deals in auto body paints. Get some 3M stripping and put it on. I did mine four years ago and it is still on there. You can get it any color and any width Boat is wet slipped. Other then that you can have it painted but auto paint doesn't stand up to well when constantly immersed in water.

Auto paint stores also sell a 3M product that is terrific for removing old stripe glue. Best stuff I've ever used.

And, yes, rubbing alcohol is needed before applying new stripes. Anything else can leave a film.

… or if ya' wanna' do something kinda' custom, work up a design and have your local sign shop cut some outdoor rated decals (like car graphics) for ya'.

Re: Boat pin-striping

It is a great DIY project and opportunity to spice up the exterior.

My partner has had a few shops and actually, the automotive pin striping worked good above the rub rail, below it started to wear from just light docking and fenders almost immediately so we re-did with some Marine striping roll I think I ordered from here. That material has held up for the last few years No problem!!!

Taking the old off was a Major PITA, I think I used a rubber wheel on an air tool, but we were able to get rid of the 1997 style teal & gold stripes/ decals and I ordered New Stingray decals From E-bay which came in a correct font. The replacements are one 1" black belt line at the water level, a small pinstripe above the rub rail, black decals. I get complements all the time that it looks like a much newer model.

Thanks for all the great info guys. Im really just looking for the right place to take the boat and have it done by a pro. Im sure i could do it myself, but want it done right. I was just curious if the paint and body shops do this sort of project.

Re: Boat pin-striping

Sorry I'm late to the game. I had my boot striping re-done last year. Marine Max had my same stripe in stock and I had my marina do it. If I would have done it myself however it would have been all over the place, bubbly and not straight.
Anyway, I ended up paying something like $2.50 per foot. It has three different sized stripes with two colors (blue and gold). I bought 50 feet. Check your local marine store - also I believe boat US has boot stripes as well.

Re: Boat pin-striping

most of the striping on boats is 3M scotch-cal

same stuff you get at most auto-body stores for pinstriping your car.

I have replaced or repaired striping on all my boats, and half the families boats. just make sure you clean the surface with a good wax and grease remove. then clean again. then clean with alcohol.

after the decal is applied, then rewax the boat.
