Another issue that has developed recently is my temp gauge was reading only 120F. Not being certain if it was the sender or the thermostat (impeller was changed when I bought this outdrive, or so the seller says) I picked up both from West Marine yesterday (sierra) and installed them. Now the temp is showing 200F. I guess it's possible I cooked the impeller, or perhaps it really wasn't changed. Between this and the trim issue, I'm thinking maybe it's time to hang it up for the year since we're expecting significant drops in temp at the end of the week.

I would recommend testing the pulled thermostat. Just stick it and a thermometer in a pan of water and measure what temp it opens. Find out if it was any issue. I would also suggest testing your engine temp gauge.

Make sure you use the OEM gasket. Non genuine don't have the continuity rivets.

very difficult to follow your post?
1. Your temp gauge was reading 120 and you thought that it was a problem?
2. The previous owner says the impeller was replaced.
3. You went and bought a impeller and sender at West Marine.
4. Assuming you installed both?
5. Now temp reads 200
6. Then you say "maybe it was never changed" ? But you said you changed both?
I'm confused

I should have been more clear in my first post. Actually certain sierra gaskets also have the rivets. Went out this afternoon to investigate some more. lowered it into the water and fired it up. Ran it until the temp gauge read 190. Pulled the sierra thermostat I just installed yesterday and reinstalled the mercury thermostat. Put it back together and fired it up. Used the IR thermometer to readings all over the intake manifold and water pump hose. Even though the gauge was reading 190, The IR thermometer read 150-160. Went down the street to buy a new thermostat gasket, and while at the marina I asked if they had a temp sender, and they did (quicksilver). Bought that as well. Came home, installed the fresh gasket, and new sender, fired it up and the temp held between 155-160. Problem solved. 4.3 vortec + alpha gen1 drive.
