Did a couple of searches & just maybe didn't enter the right keywords because I've been unable to find the answer to this on the forum or through a search engine: What is the risk(s) to posting a picture of a boat online with the registration numbers showing in the pics? I've seen several pics in the forum that show the registration numbers, but then anything on TV has the registration #'s blacked out. For example, the TV show 'Swamp People' always blacks out the registration #'s on the boats when it is visible. It's kind of like car license plates- they too are always blacked out on TV or sometimes in pics online. What are the reasons for this & what could someone with bad intentions do if they have your boat registration #'s?

i wouldnt worry about it.....

as long as you have the regi papers, and you have title to the boat, you are ok...

there is the remote possibility that someone could track you down via the regi numbers.......but very unlikely.
it depends on your personal amount of paranoia

Yup, privacy, identity theft, all that stuff. It is hard to say if people can access information, based on reg. numbers.

I am wondering if I post my registration numbers, will somebody come and steal my boat (please)???

Strictly a legal liability issue for the tv shows.

You don't block out your registration numbers or license plate numbers while on the water or driving on the road, do you?

Anyone can get your license and registration numbers just by looking at them.

No more identity theft risk than that of using your boat on the water.
Don't know of any bank that asks "what is your name, address, and boat registration number" when requesting id.

I suppose, if your really pizz someone off on here, they could report you.
Call the cops and report that you were doing something illegal with your boat.
But then they would be in deep doo doo for filing a false report.

There is a line to be drawn between caution and paranoia, but the trick in this day and age is to find it. After a couple minutes of cussing, I had my reg # airbrushed out, then no worries. Actually, I think the pic looks better without it.
