Boat Safety Foam Filled but Open Transom

I just bought a 23 ft boat with an open transom and twin engines. The transom is only 7 inches above the water line. I would like to know if any one has experience with these open transom foam filled boats in rough weather. They have an advantage of pouring out water from over the bow under power but if you lost power and couldn't get the bow pointed to the waves? I know that it is very dangerous for boats that are not foam filled. Water unchecked getting under the deck and then water over the transom spells disaster. I can leave the plug out and dont notice any difference. I'm modifying splash guard so that it is sealed better but still can be lowered for water over the bow in the inlets.

I have a foam filled hull and the plug is to drain a conduit where the wires and fuel lines pass through. it is sealed from the rest of the hull. maybe yours is similar

my recently acquired aquasport 222 CC has a transom like yours... My cockpit has self bailing scuppers which will help, but some people have recommended shields for following seas. My internal bilge is sealed 'watertight' at the transom, so water SHOULDNT get in there, it should slosh around the deck - probably similar to yours.

I havent had the boat in the water yet - need to get the axles replaced on the trailer and some wiring gremlins to the nav lights worked out.

hopefully another week i'll have it in the water.

Having a open or 7 inch transom is a great thing . What water comes in should go right out .As far as losing power I dont think your rear end would ever turn enough toward following seas to really worry about. You should really have an aux motor anyway also tools on board and spare parts If you want to really prepare yourself and I sugest it is to buy a parachute or a sea anchor I have one and have deployed it and it will always keep your bow to the wind. its bad enough when you break down but its a great thing when you are prepared and everyone on board is alot more at ease and will praise you for having it so together. If you want to go one step further buy an E PERB. good luck
