I am looking at an 89 crestliner 17ft nordic. Is a 90 horse mariner enough power? I would like to get 40 mph or close to it, as well as ski with it. The hull weight is supposed to be around 1100 pounds.

Re: boat shopping

I have a 17' 77 Ebbtide with a 120 HP Evinrude on it. The hull was 1200 dry. I could only barely squeeze 40 out of it and keep it propped for a decent hole shot while skiing. With a 90, I imagine you can do one or the other but not both.

90 HP would probably be ok but you'll want two props. One for water sports and another for cruising.

Re: boat shopping

I like this boat and I hope it will fit my needs. I've never owned a mariner, but I've heard it's made by mercury. If anyone knows anything good or bad, let me know. I think I'll use a prop for take off power, that's more important than speed. Hopefully I can still get up to 30-35 or so.

Thanks for the help

Take it for a test drive, then you will know if it suits your needs/desires.
