Re: Boat Storage

I store mine in the back yard (I have a straight route from the driveway). At a minimum, buy a trailer coupler lock so thieves cant jsut hook up and go. I read that some people remove trailer wheels...I would consider using a thick chain or cable with a lock so it can't go anywhere. Anything that can be removed easily..lock it up or bring into house (depth finders, gps, life vests, fishing gear, water toys etc). I/O drive...consider getting the keyed locking nuts...I have heard of people finding that their outdrive is missing. It will also depend on where you live...sooo...adjust this to your needs.

-JustMrWill

PS Welcome aboard!

Re: Boat Storage

Great advice from MrWill. I used to keep mine in the front drive and I installed an old car alarm I had lying around on it. I also had the coupler lock and I ran a heavy duty cable bike lock through the wheels. A little paranoid maybe? :D

I worry more about my $1,500 30 year old boat than I do my $30,000 truck. Don't mess with my boat!

I keep my old boat in the sideyard with no protection of anykind. It's still there after two years, I keep hoping to come home one day and find it gone.

Re: Boat Storage

Mine's beside my house in a gravel parking area. I've left the gate open most the time hoping someone would take it...but they never do.

Re: Boat Storage

Thanks for the advice. I want it in the back but the wife is giving me grief making a side gate in the backyard from the side street.

Re: Boat Storage

Go ahead and put in the gate. Tell your wife that local ordinance prevents the storage of boats in the front yard. In some towns that is the truth!

Pontoon in the side driveway, Boston Whaler in the backyard for now, but I'm going to have to rearrange because I can't pull anything in or out of the backyard without moving the 'toon. Maybe I'll just buy another boat???

Mine has a removable / folding tongue. I just fold it back, wrap the safety chain around the frame and put a padlock on it.

BTW - In the driveway until I can find a better place.

Re: Boat Storage

I'm a bit spoiled...I store mine in the 3rd stall of my garage. Best thing I ever did when building our house was to make my garage extra wide (3+ wide), and the 3rd stall double long. Leaves plenty of room for tinkering on the engine...like last night!

Re: Boat Storage

I do outside, Covered with a aftermarket cover with a support system under it, and a 24X12' Tarp on top. Tie down of the tarp can be challenging, but I have a side apron/pad to park it on, so the wind generally gets deflected by the house. Trailer is unmoveable without tires, on jack stands. I live in a remote area of the county, so my big security issue is critters. I keep 2 small tuna cans filled with tasty Peak Anti Freeze in the boat for the critters liquid refreshments. So far NO VISITORS.
