ORANGE ? A Los Angeles County Sheriff's boat that was stuck on City Drive under the eastbound 22 freeway bridge was supposed to begin sea trials today, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Mike Carriles with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they just bought the boat, but that it's not in their possession yet.

Many office workers came out to see the Los Angeles County Sheriff's boat stuck on City Drive under the eastbound 22 freeway bridge.

Orange Police Lt. Dave Hill said the boat was headed to Newport Beach but did not know further details.

Orange Police Spokesman Dan Adams said that once the boat collided with the leading edge of the overpass, it was able to keep going through but was held there as Caltrans investigated the scope of damage.

No injuries were reported and CHP Officer Gabe Montoya said the bridge suffered minor cosmetic damage. The boat left with scratch marks on the roof.

The California Highway Patrol and Orange police responded the incident after 11:20 p.m.

Anaheim resident Heidi Hardage was driving south on City Drive when she saw the boat. She stopped to snap some pictures of it.

"You don't see boats, big ol' boats like that on State College (City Drive)," Hardage said.

"It's weird because boats are usually on the ocean," said Hardage's son Spencer, 10.

gotta laugh at some of the comments on that article. stuff about the cops patrolling too far out of jurisdiction with the boat.

Wish the pic was bigger. Y'all reckon the trailer is a flat bed or an actual trailer made for that boat? sure would like to see what kind of tow truck it was.

Here in the midwest with a couple of resurfacings of the road the bridge height signs can be off.

Geeze! He had a pilot car in the lead...WTH!!

Even in that drop deck trailer he was WAY over sized...The pilot car company or whoever was SUPPOSED to measure how high it was will be in deep trouble.

The pilot truck should have had that fiberglass rod set just above the height of the load he was escorting. If the rod hits then the big truck stops...
Someone was not doing their job.

That is a good idea, Do most of the big load trucks require this rod or is it a option? Just curious, Thank's:)

It's the law in most states. If you look at the article and other pictures the pilot truck did have it mounted on the rear of the pickup truck.
They are supposed to stay out in front far enough that the guy driving the big truck can stop if the clearance is too low.

The pilot cars are usually independent contractors hired by the trucking company. In this case they got some stupid ones...

By the looks of the photo, the trailer is a "low boy" - a "big truck" type trailer, with smaller rims than a standard flatbed.

Luckily, it doesn't look like the cabin structure was heavily damaged. If anything, it looks like he might have knocked the radar and a few antennas off.

Speaking of antenna, I watch this gargantuan of a boat knocked his off a few years ago. I was fishing near a causeway and this giant approached the bridge from the main lake heading toward the idle zone. My partner and I was commenting on the size of the boat when I noticed the antenna on it. It was huge and obviously not going to clear the bottom of the bridge. It looked like a fishing rod made for sperm whale or something. Peoples were gawking and pointing but the operator was oblivious. He started to go under the bridge and I said sheet, the cabin won't make it either then loud scraping noise, then snap. The top third of the antena went into the water. We were speechless as that boat kept on going.

Yep, the pilot company shoudl have this poll to test the clearances. Additionally, the trucking company or pilot company should recon the route to ensure bridge heights along the route. They should have Ramped that bridge (get off on the exit and then get right back on) to bypass going under that low bridge...

"once the boat collided with the leading edge of the overpass, it was able to keep going through but was held there as Caltrans investigated the scope of damage."

The above was in the article. I am surprised they stopped and notified Caltran at all unless they got reported to Caltran before they could get away.

The pilot truck might have had trouble communicating with the trucker at a most inopportune time.
