boat that does not plane out

My father-in-law gave us a boat that does not seem to plane out until it's at full throttle. I am new to boats, so I need some advice. The boat weighs 1100 lbs. with a 75 hp outboard. I have had people tell me that I need a whale tale or a different prop. I have checked the prop and it matches the engine. I need some advice.

Try posting this question in the BOATING FORUM for more responses.

Where is your cavitation plate sitting in relation to the bottom of the boat? What is the max rpm's that you are getting?

I don't have a tach, so I don't know the rpm's the engine is at. I will have to measure where the cavitation plate is and get back with you tomorrow.

Once on plane, how far can you back off the throttle before it drops off? Could it be loaded stern-heavy?

As in the other post, if you have no tach, I myself, don't feel I could give you good advice other than "Install a tach", then, and only then, can we determine the correct prop.

GKS, I strongly suspect there's something wrong with the motor. Any prop that was produced for that motor, on a 15 footer, should be able to plane the boat fairly promptly with just you in it. That's a big old pig of a motor with plenty of displacement and midrange for 75hp.

If you got pretty close to dead even 94 psi on each cylinder, I would figure the cylinders are OK. You should get around 110 on that motor, but it's virtually impossible for them to have worn exactly the same amount. Much more likely the low figure is due to a dragging starter, or just the compression gauge used.

Did the boat plane more easily before your father in law put it away? You may just have one of the four main jets good and clogged up, so you're effectively running on 3 cylinders. Alternately, the distributor or linkage may be way out of adjustment.

Lastly, does the motor cool OK? When warmed up, it should be around 140 degrees (if I remember right). You should be able to leave your fingers on the outside of the cylinders for 2 or 3 seconds before you have to pull them off from the heat.

It could be a spun propeller hub, a clue is engine revs up high but boat is slow and is slow to plane or can't plane, also be sure the lower unit has gear oil in it, low or no oil will cause the clutch dawgs to slip, so check gear oil level, and if possible try to borrow another prop and give it a try.

If you havn't already tried it - trim the motor in toward the boat. Move the pin that adjusts the trim in a hole or two. I have a similar motor and adjusting the trim pin in got me on plane much quicker.

Back to the basics.
Check compression, check spark, check for spun prop hub.
If ok, get a tach and check wot rpm.
