hi everyone. just wondering if anyone might know why my boat tilts so bad. when not moving it is fine but when moving it tilts to one side by quite a bit. at it doesent look like anything on the boat would cause this. the only thing i know of is that the skeg is missing the bottom 2 inches. any ideas? i dont think it has anything to do with weight. thanks

Re: boat tilting bad

It leans to the left when underway, correct?? If so, it is probably due to propeller torque. There should be a fin looking tab at the back of the anti-ventilation (cavitation) plate held on with a bolt through that plate. Loosen the bolt and turn the fin so the back end is to the right a little and see if it helps. Keep moving it a little at a time and this should help, but probablly won't completely cure it. You can also add trim tabs. The smart tabs seem to be very popular. I may even have to give them a try on my recently accquired boat.

I was told the newer engines no longer have such tabs since the arrival
of hydraulic steering. My '08 Mercury 150 doesn't (and my boat lists to the left a bit itself:()

Re: boat tilting bad

I recently had the same problem. I had a hydrofoil and it turned out the cavitation plate was cracked. The combination caused the boat to list when under power. Worse at WOT. Removed the foil and it is much better. Will get the plate fixed soon.

well i tried to adjust that tab like 109jb recomended and that might have helped a little but it still leans to the left enough to be worried. just to clarify it leans not turns i can still go straight and take my hand off the wheel and it stays straight.

any ideas?

thanks

something else to check. Do you have tilt and trim? I had a boat (190 Horizon from Four Winns, beautiful boat). It had an 470 I/O. It would tilt to port when the motor was trimmed all the way down. Once underway, I would trim it up just a little, and it would even out. There was likely a slight "hook" in the hull closer to the bow. It did not create a problem, and I never did anything about it.
You might also check on the weight distribution on the boat. Depending on the size of the boat, weight dist. can make a big difference.

Just a couple of thoughts. Good luck

Re: boat tilting bad

Hi all I had the same problem with my 1965 Cobia except she leaned to the right. checked engine position transom, trim on engine etc. no luck in finding the problem until about 3 weeks ago. It turned out to be a bulge in th left side of the hull where the old discharge for the toilet was. I found it after I crossed a wake at about 10 knots and it heeled over to the point of taking water over the right side. The boat has now been sidelined until I can either repair the hull and the stringers that snapped or I decide to scrap it.

I had a 23' '69 Thunderbird that did this. No trim tabs, etc. It had a deep Vee hull which seems to be prone to this type of behavior. It just seemed to be part of the package.
