This might not be the appropriate forum, but I think it applies. Plus, I am not sure if any businesses check these forums to keep up one the desires/needs of their customers.
I see many posts on here where people are reluctant to do a maintenance item or don't do it correctly because of a "special tool", such as checking the engine alignment because they do not have the alignment tool.
Autozone, AdvancedAuto and other places that sell repair parts for cars will "loan" a tool to you so they get your business on getting the repair parts.
Why don't the boat part stores do the same thing? Compared to the volume of parts they go through in a given month, having half a dozen alignment tools, bearing pullers, etc.. on hand for "loan" doesn't seem like a huge investment on their part.
I am picking up some parts today, and I will bring up this issue with the store I deal with locally. I would think places like West Marine, Boater's World and the other national chains would really benefit from it. I can understand why Bob's Marina (who does repair work on site) might not want to enable people to do it at home. But, if he is selling the repair parts for people to do it at home, then how is it really any different?
