A friend of mine found some cracks on the bottom of his boat (see attached photo). I told him that he should get it looked at to determine WHY it is cracking. He had somebody look at it and they advised him that the reason the boat was cracking is because it was not support correct on the trailer. I have looked at the trailer and how it is supporting the boat and it looks no different than any other I have seen.

Is it possible this IS what is causing the crack shown in the photo?

I'm farsighted. I can't see from that close.

Rollers, rotten bunks, and poorly placed bunks crack boats up all the time. So does hitting stumps in Millwood.

The trick is, most boats should be on bunks placed near the stringers to distribute the weight without flexing the hull. If the hull flexes, it's going to eventually crack.

Hard to tell but that looks like a repair that is cracking. Is that gel coat or paint?

need a few more pics of the overall area to determine if they are being caused by the trailer.

however if they are where i think they are.....no the trailer is not causing that.

btw....my guess is that they are gonna move this to the restoration section.

It is almost impossible to get a good picture because it is under the boat between the two bunks. I have attached a photo that might help. The crack is located (bow to stern) where the YELLOW arrow is pointing. It is located under the boat on the ridge that is located in the BLUE box. The reason that I question the trailer being the reason for this crack is that the boat is supported above and below the crack by a bunk.

it is nearly impossible to tell by pictures alone, but i suspect it is not from the trailer. It was either a previous repair that wasn't done well, or there is internal damage (broken stringers, etc..) that is allowing the hull to flex that much.

If you want a good look at Millwood's stump population you should come down now. They've got her drawn down. And, believe it or not, Millwood is nowhere near the stumpiest around here.

I think Bruce58 is on target.
You did not mention if the same condition exists on the other side.
If it were the trailer, I would expect the same cracks to show up on both sides of the boat.
I would also expect the otherside to be worse.
The crack shown is on the generally smooth side of the road where as the other side is generally the rougher side.

In your first pic I see the horizontal crack up high, then I see what appears to be old spalling or loss of the gelcoat. Which was painted over without effort to smooth out and repair. Then there appears to be a new spot of the same (black).
Then some more spalling below that that has also been painted over.

I went south with a richer neighbor that didn't have a boat and I had one winter about 25 years ago. We hired a guide for a day, and he was bouncing his boat off stumps all day. We asked how long a boat lasted and what they did with it. He said they run it 2 years, then gel coat it and let a Yankee hold it.:D
