Like I was saying my 1974 Winner convertable will start but stop after a few seconds. I was thinking about change the spark plugs since they havent been changed in awhile. Will this help? What are the other probable issues and how can I fix it.I don't know what kinda of engine is in there, is there away to find out? thanks for all the help..

if you have spark the fuel pump or filters maybe to blame and a carb rebuild should be looked at too.change all service items so you know its not a silly thing such as points etc giving u a problem.

Take a pic of the engine and drive. How many cylinders? any Tags on the engine or drive? Any or all will be helpful to figure out what drive train you have.

After looking at the fuel line that goes from the fuel pump to the engine, there is a glass blub that has the filter in it. Should this have fuel in it? If not then that might be the problem there is no fuel in it. Now I am trying to find the identify the engine but can find the engine number. where can I look and how do Identify what kind of engine it might be? I have put starter fluid in the air intake and thats when it starts but then dies so I am thinking that it is not getting any fuel. How do I know what type of fuel pump to buy?

Re: Boat will start but stp after a few seconds

Got a question that I hope somebody can help. When I put the boat in gear going forward and put it back into neutral the engine shuts off, any hep? Also I put a quarter of a tank of gas just to get the engine running after I changed the fuel pump and filter on about two weeks ago. I have no gas, can gas eveporate this quick? I don't smell any gas in the engine compartment, any clues?

the micro switch on the gear shift mechanism is causing it to stall in the water maybe because the lower shift cable needs adjusting or replacing.you may have a hole in your tank and you could temporarily run it off an outboard tank to see if it runs ok.
there is a good youtube video on how to correctly set the shift mechanism.

Cheynessa, ID'ing the motor and drive shouldn't be that difficult. How many cylinders is the motor? Is it a v-configuration? For 1974 it would be an 8 cylinder if it's a V. If it's an inline 6 then it's a 165. If it's a 4 cylinder it's a 120 or a 140. On a 120 the intake and exhaust are both on the port side (left if you are looking forward) of the engine. I do not know about the 140. Someone else can chime in on that. If you help us to determine the engine we can help you through diagnosing the engine. Taking a well-lit and clear picture will make a world of difference as will doing the same with the drive. Unless the previousowner did a schlock paaint job the engines are usually marked clearly on the valve covers with the model and the drive usually has a sticker on the upper unit.

Look above your starter... your serial number is there. Take a photo like this, or otherwise provide the number.
