Boat wont move forward or back! HELP

I have a 2000 evenrude 40hp. I have no forward or reverse. Prop will free spin with motor off whether its in forward, reverse or neutral. How do i troubleshoot this?

If its setup remote unhook the cable and shift by hand.or remove the cover and at idle carefully shift and observe the movement of the shift mechanism.It unlikely but remove the prop and see if the hub has completely failed.See if there is any play in the prop shaft.
Drain the gear lube and check for bits of metal.

Agreed. I would first suspect a bad shift cable or linkage. If its not that than there is a problem in your lower unit or your prop hub has totally failed.
