boat wont run

my boat a 200hp johnson, will start if the fast idle but when you go to put it in gear it dies what could be wrong with it thanks jim

Start with the model number. yr?
Whats the history, is it new to you?
did it run ok before etc etc.

Could be a lot of things,
1. start with compression numbers ,
2. do a spark test 7/16" gap
3. fuel delivery.

agree totally with above. 99% dirty carbs, idle speed setting, link n sinc.
