Boating in Colorado question

I am a new boat owner. Picking up a 2007 Tahoe 216 w/260 pony mercruiser tommorrow. I had planned on maybe going to one of three places and wanted some advice if anyone has been to these. Jackson Lake I heard is shallow and water is pretty algae fill, but has soft bottom and nice beaches. Boyd Lake is close but heard rumors of unmarked shallow sand bars. Carter Lake is deep but to camp is more because you have a daily fee for truck, fee fro boat and then fee for camping. Any thoughs?

Re: Boating in Colorado question

Hey ER,
Ya gotta give me a little more than that. What are you looking to do? Do you want to fish and not worry about a load of other boats on the lake? Do you want to pull a skier or tuber or do you want to tie up with others and party barge? Let me see if I can help.
Jackson is nice early in the season, it warms up quick, there's plenty of beach and most of the campsites are on the water. The down side is it is an irrigation lake. They drain it fast and it goes green even faster.
Boyd is ok but they have some weird rules for keeping jet skis and boaters on opposite sides of the lake. And you're right, it is very shallow in spots where you would least expect it.
Carter is good early but it too drains down fast. They charge for a boat and for a vehicle (6 bucks each) and they also charge for camping, as does all other lakes. Right now it has some very shallow spots.
Try Horsetooth. It's close to you, there is no wake allowed in the coves and it's a long lake. Good for just about everything.
If you want to party barge then go to Chatfield Reservoir on a Saturday morning but get there early. I know it's a little further for you but the people are good and there's always fun to be had.
Happy hunting.

Re: Boating in Colorado question

Thanks for the tip. I am mostly looking to ski and pull a tube. I have heard good things about Jackson Lakes beach but wondered how it was for skiing and maybe some fishing in the evening. I have a state parks pass so getting in is no problem I just heard the water was a little slimy. But being bigger than chatfield and out aways from the city thought I might be able to avoid the crowds. I want to find a family friendly place.
