This somewhat came up on another thread. What type of boating knife do you carry and why. If you don't carry one, why not?

Re: Boating Knives

I always have a leatherman wave and an old 6" fixed blade in a scabbard in the tackle box. The leatherman just because they are handy to have around and the 6" cause grandpa carried it in his tackle box for 50+ years.

Spyderco Rescue on a lanyard with a carabineer is the one I always keep on the boat for general purpose use.

Re: Boating Knives

I thought I had a nice stainless fillet knife, but it's all rusted up after 3 years... in salt.

Thanks for reminding me.

Re: Boating Knives

I have a pretty good folding knife with a sharp, heavy blade on one end, and a marlin spike on the other.

4" Kershaw with assisted (one hand) opening feature, on a belt clip. Probably should use the lanyard when on water.

The same 3 inch Spyderco Native that is clipped on my pocket right now while sitting at my desk at work. Don't have a special knife just for the boat.

37 year old German Puma, because it is razor sharp and has a lock blade (had it so long it is like part of me)

21 year old Victorinox Swiss Army, because it has a thousand features (had it so long it is like part of me, great for everything from bee stings, to making notes, to starting fires)

10 year old Joseph Rodgers British army, because it has a lanyard and a marlin spike (probably the one that makes the most since)

US Airforce Survival Knife, Its VERY VERY Sharp (Think Scary) I spay it down with silicone protectant (leaves no residue) Its in the glovebox. I also carry an M-16 bayonet, its water-resistant and sharp enough to use under water. It saved my but when a old cast off rope got caught in my prop and yanked by old 17' boat stern down. Grabbed knife, splash, cut-cut, boat popped up like a cork.

Re: Boating Knives

I carry one of these around with me all the time. Never know when you might need a knife!
