Hello everyone, I have an idea not sure about it though I have a 1989 17ft Bayliner Capri 1700 with a 85hp Force outboard, and I would like to take a boat trip from Monroe, MI to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH I've heard of many people doing this and it sounds like it would be alot a really great experiance just not so sure about it, some people say my boats to small and a couple say its possible on a calm day although it might get a little ruff at times.

Has anyone done this of have any tips, pointers or suggestions????

I boat Lake Erie regularly, outta of monroe no less. I have a 22ft now, and have had a 19 and a 24. The 19 was ok in the bay on nice days, and the 24 would handle most everything comfortably with the exception of the BIG storms. I wouldn't chance going that far in a 17ft. To be safe on the lake, you're going to need to step up in size a little bit, or drive to sandusky and take the ferry. The problem is, even if you get there on a calm day, you never know what the weather is going to be like when its time to leave. There was actually a news story this morning about a 16ft capsizing out by the sister islands. Remember, Erie kicks up in a hurry, and if you are already on your way back it could get scary and fast! Just my .02 worth.

we're out of cleveland - but close to sandusky. I wouldn't do that trip in a 17. Lake Erie is very unpredictable... and does kick up in a matter of minutes. We have a 20' and are cautious about going out when it's choppy. Would hate to fall out of love with my boat on account of a bad trip. If you have a 24 or so, it would be a better idea.
