Since I'm a jeeper and carry a lot of "fix me so I can get home" parts...I figure I need to apply this same theory to boating.

So..what should be in every boaters tool kit besides, life vests, flares, horns, etc..
I can think of:

* spare engine oil
* brake fluid
* electrical kit (wire, tape, fuses, tools, solder)
* tool box (drivers, wrenches, hammer, pliers, etc)
* spare belts (merc 5.0 I/O)
* do it yourself gasket material

What else does a prepared boater have/need to perform minor fixes when afloat?

I'd add spark plugs, epoxy putty (jb weld, pig putty, etc), collapsable paddle, tow line, anchor, replacement bulbs for night running, and knife. If you really wanted to be prepared, spare prop and tools to change while in the water.

As for brake fluid, I think it would go right along with the spare tire.

I would add a tow line and a knife, maybe even a spare prop. I always have some good US Divers goggles and snorkel too, in case of the need for an underwater inspection. oh btw, do u have drum or disc brakes on that boat cause id love to know how they work!! :D

Re: Boating Tool Kit

I've never had a minor setback while boating.. only major ones.... So now I just bring a spare boat.

No. Seriously. I only boat with other folks.

I have a polish wrench set, a screw driver, wire, tape, and the typical boat safety stuff. Everything else I leave in the toolbox of the truck.. If I have a problem, it isn't getting dealt with out on the water.. I'll do what I need to do to make it back to the dock, but the boat is coming out of the water after that. :)

Floating key ring and an extra plug, check your fluids before you venture out, keep everything well maintained and you won't need emergency tools, it's not a bad idea to always have some kind of multi tool on you though, keep an extra ignition key somewhere on the boat hidden away.

Re: Boating Tool Kit

My dad was one of those guys who was always working on something. Dad taught me to carry a well stocked tool box on the boat in case something broke. It took me 20 years of moving that tool box around out of my way to realize if something breaks that requires more than a flat head & phillips head screw driver, a pair of channel locks and a roll of electrical tape to fix you aren't going to have the parts to fix it anyway.
