my 1994 200 hp vindictor evinrude runs perfect off pad to plane but I cant back it off the beach or trailer. I hate to spend time dragging it to a shop if there is an obvious fix. 22ft Hurricane deck boat with the 200 evinrude (carburated).

it will plane out in 2 seconds and starts easier than any boat motor I have ever had but, I can't pull it off the beach, bogs then dies and gets hard to start.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Look at your linkage under the hood of the engine.

Does the linkage advance as in forward gear?

Pay special attention to the linkage up by the flywheel. That is the timing.

Re: bogging in reverse...ONLY?

Seeing that it works OK in forward, I see it as a potential linkage issue with reverse.

Make sure all linkage cables are secure and watch the action.

Let us know. Good luck.

Re: bogging in reverse...ONLY?

I watched the linkage closley...alot. Took me a while to see what the difference was between forward and reverse. Everything appears to be identical as far as when cables move from neutral going forward and reverse. I found a (micro) switch with two wires at the very bottom of the shift linkages. It rocks up for forward and down for reverse. The wires run up to the top and go into the black box (power pack?). Can it be tested?

I suspect that the switch might be the source of the boggy in reverse, not sending (the computer) a signal??

IDEAS? If it is bad can you get a new one?

Thanks!

What is the RPM in fwd gear at idle?

REason I ask is the prop is inefficient running backwards, it puts more load on the engine when in reverse, if the base rpm is low it will stall in reverse.
750 rpm , in gear fwd at idle , is good.

Idle rpm is adjusted by advancing ( for increased rpm) the timing, this is done in the water , in gear at idle fwd.

Idle on the hose in neutral will be around 1100.

Do you have the optical ignition?
Check the idle timing pickup roller is almost touching the cam.
Mine was 1/2" off the cam, don't know how they get that way.

200hp? Wouldn't want that to rev too high in reverse. It'll quickly swamp your boat.:eek:

Re: bogging in reverse...ONLY?

You are not getting much help I see.
The switch you are referring to is the reverse cut-out switch. It is supposed to MOMENTARILY close as the shifter is moved from reverse to neutral. It supposedly makes shifting easier.
If it is closed ALL THE TIME when you are in reverse, the effect will be that three cylinders will not be firing.
Simply follow the wire up to the power pack area, and disconnect. Then try it.
If your problem is remedied, look at a defective switch, or a mis-adjusted switch.

Oh, and this is NOT optical ignition, and it does not have a computer.

YEA, wanting something to try.

I will pull the top off the power pack and unplug one of the wires. It looked like one of the two wires is a ground screwed to the cylinders.

How hard will it be to get a new switch?

How obvious is it if you leave it disconnected?

THANKS

Re: bogging in reverse...ONLY?

Well, you could just disconnect the ground wire. Just as long as the switch cannot make a complete ground circuit. That's what it does, it grounds a black/orange wire momentarily as you shift, to reduce the stress on the gearcase from 6 cylinders firing. When it is working, it momentarily kills three cyls through the shift process.

If you can shift it with ease, and the shift switch is disconnected, it will not hurt to leave it disconnected. If it is hard to get it out of reverse, maybe best to fix it so it operates properly.

This is all assuming that this is your problem....test it first.

If it is the culprit, what is the part called and where can I buy one?

Thanks

Re: bogging in reverse...ONLY?

On shop.evinrude.com, drill down into your motor by model number, and look in the cylinder and crankcase section.

It is item #98, 584754, Switch and cable assy.

Get familiar with shop.evinrude.com. It is a must know site for a DIY boat mechanic.
