Boggs down in gear

I have a 78 mercury 900 that is having some issues when in gear. We've replaced the stator, switch box, plugs, distributor cap, and timing belt. It idles fine and throttles fine. When trying to get it in gear it boggs down and dies. It something to do with the load, if I throttle it in reverse (it never engages reverse either) then throw it in gear it runs fine 70% of the time. From neutral to forward it boggs under the load and dies. The engine seems to be running just fine as long as there isn't a load on it. Thoughts? Time to take it to a real mechanic ;)

You have a dirty or misadjusted fuel system, if you don't repair it soon the lean condition could cause major internal damage.

Really you think it's fuel? If I advance the throttle it runs just fine, it's just when I put it right into gear. When I rev it in reverse then engage, goes full speed. just not when I go directly into gear. Dirty fuel system or something wrong with the carbs?

The carbs are a major part of the system and are either not adjusted properly of have crud in the low speed circurt

Re: Boggs down in gear

Thanks for the info. I think it's time for me to take it in. I've done all I can do with my limited experience. I Feel like I am so close just don't want to spend and arm and and a leg on an old motor...
