Boiler Catastrophy ,Have to replace it ,Which to get?

Woke up Sun morn to gushing water and a flood as my 30 yr old Weil McLain oil boiler burst.THANK GOD WE WERE HOME.Cant imagine if we were not home to shut water main.I have quotes on Weil Mclain wtz 03 boiler and a Peerless.Service company that I trust and have been using for past 20 years quoted me on the Weil McLain .Another very good service company quoted me on a Peerless.I assume I really cant make a bad choice and I need to do this quickly.anyone recently have to replace their oil boiler ??? Any educated advice is appreciated.both are with Riello burners.Thanks Charlie

Unable to answer that question, but why would you go back with oil?
Propane is more efficient from what I'm reading

If you can Charlie go with nat gas, low maintenance and no worries about deliveries

Lou,natural gas is a great option however needs to be planned out which I no longer have the luxury to do.Getting the line to my home and then getting a plumber to run it into my home and lining my chimney with stainless would probably be a month long ordeal.When we bought out home 31 yrs ago,Lilco was promoting "FREE" natural gas boiler conversion to switch over from oil .At that time my Weil McLain boiler was only 2 years old so I passed on the offer.As far as propane is concerned,here on Long Island propane heated homes account for approx 1% of homes so I dont ever want to be in that minority.Airtight wood burning stove that I was going to do away with is keeping us comfy enough for this week without a boiler.Charlie

They’re playing games with AFUE ratings 95% of 91,500 btu is less than 85% of 138,500

Propane: 91,500 * 0.95 = 86,925 effective BTUs per gallon

Heating Oil: 138,500 * 0.85 = 117,725 effective BTUs per gallon

To do an apples-to-apples comparison, look at how many gallons of propane are required to produce as much heat as a gallon of heating oil (117,725 / 86,925 = 1.35).

To do a price comparison, take the price per gallon of propane and multiply it by 1.35 to see how it compares to the price per gallon of heating oil.

On top of that you add in the rental fee for the propane tank.

Our tank rental is $1.06/delivery. I don't understand it either, but whatever.... We have a Weil Mclain boiler powered by propane, keep fill. Ours too needs replacing. Although, I'm milking it out as long as I can... Hate to have it go when were gone for extended periods of time, but we can't shut it down...

Do you have a shutoff on the water coming into the boiler. I would leave it closed. Shouldn't need water unless there's a leak. I just added antifreeze to mine and will leave the valve shut... Just for the reasons you had...

Good point,and yes I do,the thought never entered my mind in the 30 years I am in this house nor the 50 years in our other house.Guess thats what I will be doing any time we are not home for the night.Anyway brand new boiler is in and shouldnt be an issue again.(at least for the next 30 years)Charlie
