Generally the main fuse will be blow when that bonehead blunder is made.

Don't ask how I know this.

Should be a spare fuse in the fuse block.

Re: Bonehead blunder

thanks, I'll check I'll check the fuseblock. the tilt/trim motor has it's own cables and an inline fuse on the positive cable, I tried to raise the motor and realized the reversal after it did'nt work. I assume I've damaged the t/t motor?

Re: Bonehead blunder

The trim/tilt cables go from the trim/tilt relay to the trim/tilt motor. Usually, neither of those cables is protected with a fuse.

Battery power goes to the motor. Battery power is fed to the trim/tilt relay but nothing happens because the relay is not activated.

Separately, battery power is provided through a fuse to the main engine harness. Power goes to the key switch to run the motor, activate the starter motor and to operate the trim/tilt relay. If the fuse is blown there is no power available.

If the fuse is OK then when the key switch is turned to the ON position the gauges should light up. When the key is turned to the start position the starter motor should operate. If the trim/tilt relay is activated the relay will close and battery power will run the motor up or down, depending upon which way the switch was pressed.

I don't see any effect on the trim/tilt motor at all from whatever was done.

I've done that once and it blew out that main fuse under the cowling....guess Yamaha figured on folks making this mistake and the fuse protects us from our screw-ups....My fuse was about a 20amp in-line unit and fairly easy to access....guess they knew we'd do this!....

Re: Bonehead blunder

Thanks once more guys, I found one of 2 fuses ( 20amp ) blown. A spare for each was housed in the fuseblock and after replacing it the T/T works, I'll wait till it warms up to crank the motor. I replaced the corroded ends of the big cables a few years ago and removed the red positive lead, I will wrap it w red tape to prevent this from happenning again and replace the spare fuse.
