Bonehead Move on my VP 3.0 SX-M - Cooked Water Pump?

DOH!!!
So I was out this weekend and I am pretty sure I burned up my water pump.

I was out in the salt 2 weeks ago and when I got home I wanted to run Salt Away thru the system so used the flush port inside the motor compartment vs the earmuff method on the outdrive. Got a phone call during all this and got distracted forgot to replace the cap on the flush port.

Then this last weekend when I launched the boat I heard a whining noise that sounded like the alternator belt - and was coming from the same area as the belt. I was only idling the motor, I did rev it once or twice to see if it would quiet down - but it wouldnt. Then a few minutes later the temp alarm went off and I saw the temp was high so I shut down the motor to look over everything. I assumed something was wrong with the water intake so I lifted the drive and check the intake ports, they were all clear. Then I opened the dog house lid and saw the open port. I closed the port cap and let the motor cool and then started it up to see if it would stay cool, but it wouldnt, the temp climbed again.

So then I let it cool again to under 125 deg and hooked up my washdown hose to the flush out port and ran the motor. The temp immediately dropped below 100 and slowly climbed and stayed at a normal range as long as I was running the washout pump. And I thought maybe that would help prime the normal cooling pump so I shut off the washdown pump but the temp climbed high again.

So I think its pretty clear that I cooked my water pump or impeller or whatever this motor uses. I havent looked in my manual yet so I dont know if it uses an impeller in the outdrive similar to an outboard? Or is it more like the water pump system on a car that is driven by the belt?

I sure hope I didnt do much more damage.... The temp climbed to about 200, maybe a bit more before the alarm went off but then I shut the motor down right away. I didnt run cold lake water thru it until the temp cooled as I was concerned the sudden temp shock would crack something.

Anyway - just from browsing it looks like the water pump is similar to a car and driven by the belt? And of course its more expensive than the impeller type...

I can handle the $150 lesson - making sure I dont leave things open, and when you hear something abnormal - SHUT DOWN THE MOTOR!!!

I just hope the water pump is the only thing I damaged and nothing very serious... or expensive....

I overheated a few weeks back. The impeller is not bad to replace. Back flush the system to get all the pieces of the old one out. I ended up with water in my cylinders. Seems the riser gaskets have a tendency to fail after an overheat. To be safe, I'd just change them too.

OK thanks CV. So then should I check my oil to see if there is water in it? Will that tell me if the riser gasket has failed? I am at work and dont have my repair manual so I will have to look at it later tonight to see what and where the riser gasket is. Is there more than one or??? And I'm not sure what you mean by "back flush" can you please give me some info on how to do that?

Yeah and I did look at the manual for the seawater pump and then found it on the motor. Its looks pretty easy and affordable to open it up and rebuild it. What do you think the chances are that I damaged the circulation pump also?

BTW my motor is a 2004 3.0L VP GLP-A

Thanks again for the help!

Circulation pump should be fine. The riser gaskets are easy too, 4 bolts on each exhaust riser. I didn't notice water in my oil until I fixed the raw water pump and went back to the lake. They were like $30 for the riser gaskets, I'd just replace them. I sure wish I had.

Instructions say no gasket sealer on those, I read in the adults only section that Volvo now says to use that copper high temp gasket stuff. Just did on mine.

Cool thanks CV - just ordered the pump rebuild kit so I will get some of the copper sealant when I order the riser gaskets too. Thanks for all the help and info!

Are those riser gaskets part #3850495? And it looks like there are 3 gaskets per riser? OK - stupid question, how many exhaust risers does my 3L GLP-A have??? I guess I should go look under the hood and in the manual.....

You are talking about #10 correct? #11 says its a "plate"? But that drawing shows 2 #10 gaskets?

(at first I was looking at the drawing for the 3" exhaust riser extension and it showed 3 gaskets)
