Ok. 1982 60hp evinrude

Tried to rebuild starter.... but it was going to cost as much to do that as get a new one... so it arrived today and it hangs on the two (inherited)bad spots on the flywheel.

This new starter was described as: " United Technologies style unit "

Fits ok. And would be fine if not for the boogered up teeth on the flywheel.

btw, the old starter never got hung. but it is well worn in.

So, the question:

What should I do?

1. 'Adjust' the flywheel? Can't go back if it doesn't work. But maybe if I square it up a little I am in better shape?
2. let it ride....? wait until the new starter 'grooves' in? It is pretty squared off.
3. maybe try a thin shim to pull it out a wee bit? Am I crazy?
4. Something I haven't thought of and you guys have?

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Oh.... the boogered teeth are in two spots.

spot one: 3 teeth. the worst is beat down about 3/16th inch.
spot two: 6 or 8 with varying damage. none worse than spot one.

hunt a flywheel, is the right solution. you can try to file teeth, on flywheel.
