I am helping a friend to refinish is 1985 Whaler. It is a 17' Montauck. While looking at some of the damage areas on the hull, it almost appears to me that the boat was painted in the past. In the picture, you can see the grey color surface which is just below the topcoat color. To me, it looks like a primer. If I recall, gelcoat is a consistant color and it is bonded right to the glass. If this was simply damage to gelcoat, I would expect to see 1 transition to the glass below. Not a couple of colors. Did BW do something different? Maybe this area was previously damaged and repaired?

It does look like it's been painted before. If you sand down further you should find the original color. Whats the red from, more paint under the gray primer?

Thanks. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow, but my best guess at this point is that this area was previously repaired. The red almost looks like an automotive glazing compound.
