Ok I am trading for a 1967 13 foot boston whaler. It appears the id tag came off the boat at one point. So the guy had to go get it inspected in ohio and they issued another tag. Well after looking through the paper work he only has a boat registration for it. That is all they gave him. It is not a title. The registration does have the make and year but no model.
I am going to have to get the trailer weighed as well because he lost the registration for it. He is a honest person. I just want to get my ducks in a row first. Does anyone see any potential problems with this? insurance etc...
Thanks

Depends where you are, really. Here in Minnesota, small boats don't have titles, just registration, and I've registered two of them that had no paper at all. The nice lady at the desk looked up the registration number, took $25 from me and gave me an new year tag. You do get a green tag you're supposed to sign if you sell the boat, but none of the boats I've bought had one. I think the clerk just looks up the registration number. If it hasn't been reported stolen, you're the new owner.

Trailers under 2500 lb GVW don't have titles here, either. They get permanent registration. I didn't even bother fooling with the trailer with the last boat I bought. The guy who had it before me hadn't, either. Never mind.

It's a lot different for boats in California, where they're all titled. I've gotten around that by claiming the boat was homemade. "Do you have receipts for the materials," the clerk asked. "Nope. I built it out of stuff I had laying around." "OK," she said.

check with the local authorities that handle the registration and title. in Fla boats are title, and registered, boat trailers are only registered.

Every state is different. Here in NC they just passed a law that any vessel over 12 ft must be titled and registered. The trailers are titled also.I have a jet ski trailer with no paperwork except a Fla.bill of sale and still can't get it titled..The DMV told me i must have proof that the guy i bought it from had reciepts from who he bought it from...Crazy!!

Gee........... Gary you made that trailer.....
Looks very professional..............
So, you are going to register it HOMEMADE!!! Great idea.
I did one just like that and DMV issued me a trailer VIN tag and number....:D

Grind the Vin off.

I'll tell you my story. I bought my boat with no title...trailer requires nothing in my state. I only had a bill of sale. tracked down the current title owner...he was dead. I contacted a title company, they did a title mechanics lien, and in no time at all, bam! I had a title. Try calling a company like that.
