This IS an engine question and MAY belong somewhere else, but being a general question, I thought it might fit here best. I've changed the gear oil in my 60 bigfoot and my 30 'rude. Both times it was messy as the nozzle of the bottle doesn't reach into the filler hole. The upper and lower anti-ventilation plates get in the way. A short piece of 1/4" hose helps. Is there a better way? Secondly, how do you know how much to put in? Pulling out the hose after every squirt to check is a PITA.

I use a screw in attachment on a plastic hose (and a Gear lube pump that fits quart containers) and you should ALWAYS fill from the bottom hole..... when it starts coming out the top ..... replace the top bolt....... unscrew the hose and do the bottom. Works fairly slick!

Ya, get the pump or I will get 2 quarts and fill one bottle completely to the top then screw it into the bottom hole and squeeze till it comes out the top hole abd it is full, really hard to over fill.

When it it full put the top plug in to keep it from leaking and then replace the bottom plug.

Don't forget to replace the nylon washers if needed!

Sounds like you're filling from the top and not the bottom. The fill/drain hole is in the bottom of the L/U. The top hole is the vent.

Get the pump and fill from quarts. I don't even need to wear gloves or clean up my hands anymore.
