What is the purpose of the cavity coming down the side and across the bottom of the bowl? Does it need to be clean for high speed performance? Or just the jet? Thankyou.

Re: Bottom of float bowl question

ON some early models of that carb, the passageway carried the idle fuel up the side of the carb to the top where the idle and off-idle calibration holes deliver fuel at low speeds.

Later models now have a small brass tube inside the main fuel nozzle that goes up through the carb throat to the top where it's metered and delivered to the idle port and calibration holes.

my carb has the small nozzle like you are describing so maybe the tunnels do not have any effect now.

if you'll compare the upper carb body to the float chamber, you'll probably see a non threaded hole that will match up with a passageway from the float chamber...the passage in the carb body goes up and over to the idle mixture needle and well...you'll still have the center brass tube which extends up into the venturi..at least that's the way it is on the carb for a 1958 10 hp....and yeah, that passage was stopped up on both ends

The carb in the picture first came out in 1968 in the 55hp triple and was later used over the years in 20hp and larger motors up to 75hp. There are no "line up holes" for the side passages in the later versions.

It uses the #396701 carb kit.
