bottom paint help

I have a 24 ft Trophy that is 12 years old. Its kept most of the year on a trailer and under cover. Used mostly in fresh water but for one month of the year it is in Monterey Bay. After a month when we pull it out it has about a two inch green beard hanging from it that is a bear to get off. The bottom has never been painted other than the original from the factory. For this situation, what would be the best bottom paint and can I do it myself. Thanks
