Hello,

i need a little help, a newer boat owner and confused. I have a lot going on..

I notice I am losing rpms at WOT and top speed. The boat runs really good otherwise.

When I pulled it out last fall, I noticed a good amount of barnicles and stuff on the boat. I don't know if that is causing all the problems or even just some. what I do know is that either way its time to be bottom painted again.

I have never bottom painted a boat and not sure what is currently on there. Searching around I see there are different kinds and types of paints. I am a capable DIY'er

What do you think about the pettit hydrocoat (water based) i like the easy cleanup and not having to launch immediately after.

The boat sits on a mooring in a river during the season and in the yard on the trailer in the off season. It is used maybe once a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Would this paint be suffice for the circumstance?

Can anyone give me a little direction?

I don't know much about bottom paint but I can say that growth on the bottom could certainly be contributing to your performance issues. Also, the BEST advice on bottom paint will be found from other people boating/mooring on your body of water. They'll be able to tell you what works best and how often then need to redo it. For anyone on here to comment, we'll at minimum need to know where you're located and where you boat.

bfan781,

You need to fill out your profile so we know where you live and boat. Location makes a huge difference in boating.

Yep, the growth in your river can be completely different than the growth in the river by me.

Also agree that asking others in your area what they are using is a good idea.

But if you lost top speed and RPMS last year, it's the fouled bottom's fault. And do NOT continue to run the boat that way. You can actually cause engine damage doing that. Valves first, then pistons! (Don't ask me how I know, though, okay? ;) )

Another option is bottom paint Monterey by SeaHawk. I think this is the best bang for your buck out there, especially for water based. For your needs though, in a river, I'm thinking you could go with a low grade paint like AF-33 with a Bioboost if you algae/slime is a problem only. I bet you don't even have to worry about hard growth?

barnacles = salt water, I think. Maybe not? anyway, this is one for local knowledge.

It can ABSOLUTELY make a big difference in the boat's preformance. During the peak of the season here (in salt water), it's common practice to get in the water and scrape barnacles off LU's and props every 2-3 weeks. Good bottom paint keeps the hull pretty clean, but the metal parts ALWAYS grow stuff, no matter what antifouling we use on them.

The type of anutifouling paint you need depends on where you live and what kind of critters grow on the boat. Local knowledge is your best bet.
