Bottom paint question?

Ok heres the deal, I'm new to boating and just got my first boat, thankfully I found this site cause I have learned alot just from reading through post so far. I will be spending most of the cooler months making this boat my own which I'm looking forward to. So to the question about paint, the boat was bottom painted and is starting to look like crap. A couple questions, can I remove the bottom paint to get it back to the gelcoat, or will I need to remove as much as possible and then repaint with bottom paint. When I rub my finger on the bottom paint it comes off on my finger if that means anything. The boat will be trailered almost all the time except for maybe a week during a family vacation, and will probably be used in both salt and fresh water, mostly fresh.

Welcome to Iboats Adam ..

Sounds like you have a Biocide paint on the bottom..

From what your post says about staying out of the water .. Pressure wash the thing and leave it.

You do not need to BP unless your a slipped boat ( in the water in a well for an extended period of time ).

If it looks like crap then just live with it or take a dull scraper and back your boat over a sheet of plastic ( to catch the flakes ) and scrap off what you can.. leave the rest and enjoy your boating season .

Thanks, will pressure washing help remove any of the paint, also will it damage any of the paint under the bottom paint.

It might remove all of the paint. Cant tell from here .. but its possible.

If a pressure washer damages things .. its time to replace it .
