Bottom paint redo advise

Hello all I have a boat with a ablative type of bottom paint. Manufacturer unknown, the condition is fairly worn thru, (as it is designed to do) with the bottom fiberglass showing thru in many places. We also go some barnacles that have been removed but left the small embedded disk (the name escapes me) clinging to the hull. The boat is both trailered and left out of the water for days and also moored for weeks in the water.

So time to redo the bottom paint. Do I need to sand all the old paint off and remove all the barnacle remants. They are embedded and I tried sanding a small section and they are extremely difficult to completely remove. Or can I just sand everything smooth and paint over it all assuming the paints are compatible?

Speaking of paint what does everyone suggest? I assume it needs to be another ablative type? Someone mentioned a semiablative type? Any thoughts!!! Thanks Ike

I'd just paint over the "discs" if it's not that many. Won't matter, practically speaking. And you don't need to sand off the old paint.

As for the type, either tell us where you are mooring, or better, ask the locals.

You can get some barnacle remover solution at marine stores that will help in getting the banacle remnants to come loose. It is probably pricey.

If you use a similar ablative paint, then only mild sand may be necessary. If you plan on changing colors, etc, then maybe more of a paint removal process (like 'Peel Away').

I use ePaint EP-2000 . . . nice hard finish and the 'critters' hate it, but it is environmentally friendly.

Powerwash the old antifouling paint and repaint it. No sanding is necessary. Actually the powerwashing is really necessary. Just try to get most of the dirt off the paint, before repainting.

Sorry, fat finger mistake. The power washing is not really necessary.

Sorry all did not setup the subscription and did not know there were posts. Thanks for all the reponses and info. The boat is moored in the Peconic Bay of Long Island New York. I was hoping that was the answer about the barnacle remnants. They are so thin and so well stuck on I was not sure why I would need to remove them. The bottom is nice and clean already but power washing is not a big deal.

I tried muriatic acid on them and it just eats them up, cheap but nasty stuff to deal with.

I do plan to use the same type of paint, ablative type and AquaGaurd was suggested. Any thoughts?

Thanks again all Ike

See what copper and biocide content the other boaters in your area use. Warmer water requires more antifouling protection. I use the Ablative solvent-based paint and toss out all the rolers, tray liners and chip brushes, when the jo is done. Last I checked the water-based stuff did not have as much biocide. Use some masking tape to mask the edge of the paint. You will get a better job....
