Question, I will be getting my boat in the water in 2 weeks or so, ( boat docks in salt water) being it it late in the season, I was wandering if I could get away without painting the bottom and outdrive for 2 months, I paint it every year normally, any comments? Thanks!

Re: Bottom paint

No direct experience but from what I've read I think things can start to grow at about the 2 week mark. I think I read about somebody that went longer by taking the boat into shallow water fairly frequently and scrubbing the bottom to buy some time.

Re: Bottom paint

If you have multi season or ablative bottom paint on the boat, you might be OK. If not, you will get pretty good growth, which will be a real PIA to remove. if the boat is unpainted, it will ve covered with barnicles by late Sept. These have rock-hard glue holding them to the hull.

Thanks for the reply, it has ablative bottom paint from the last season, I figured i would touch up any spots taht need to be done and just get a couple of months out of the boat!

Re: Bottom paint

I dock my boat in fresh water and still painted it 2 years ago. The first year without paint was nasty. Bottom was green within a week. Outdrive still grows a nice set of green hair during the summer. Next summer will be time to do a touch up.

Long Islanders on other forums are reporting an 'explosion' in barnacle growth this year. I think you want to paint it.

Re: Bottom paint

Don't see why not if you already have bottom paint and want to touch-up. Not all ablative paints are the same. Some are used for trailering (bringing boat out of water) and others are for keeping boat in water. Some paints are good in only saltwater, freshwater or both. Your running gear will take the most beating from the barnicles. We usually recoat after 2 years and 14,000 miles.

Well thanks for the advice, I am going to do the touch up and hope for the best, at least I will be able to use the boat even if it late in the year!
