Bottom Painting on a trailer

Hi everyone,

I have most of my bottom painting done, well at least the first coat, for this year.

The boat is on rollers, I want to paint where the rollers and boat meet. I don't have boat stands.

Is it a fairly safe operation to loosen the winch and rear straps to move the boat just enough so I can paint where the rollers are; then when finished get it back where it belongs?

Or does this sound like a really stupid idea? What would you do?

No it is not a problem to do that. Are you planning on keeping the boat in a slip, or trailering it to the launch ramp when you want to use it ?

Thanks for that.

It will be in a slip, putting it in the water myself via ramp.

Do it while it's hooked to your car that way there's no chance of it over balancing, not likely but possible if you push the boat back too far & your towball weight is light to start with.
Let out a foot of winch cable then lock the winch back up, if the boat is hard to push off use your car to jerk it by hitting the brakes while going backwards.
Just do it all gently and you won't have a problem.
(Don't forget the tie down stuff.)

An alternative method is to jack it off the trailer a couple of inches. I drop the trailer tongue and put blocks under the transom. Now jack up the keel and adjust the trailer jack until the boat is suspended an inch or two. Those thin foam rollers will then fit between trailer rollers and hull.

Happy rolling
