bottom painting question

I'm considering buying a used boat (2002) that has had the bottom painted since it is kept in the water in the summer. My previous boat (1989 Regal) was never kept in the water and never painted. I will be keeping whatever I buy on a lift and want to know if the bottom paint can be removed and returned to the original gel coat. Would also like some advise about if bottom painting affects the performance. The boat in question is a 22.5 crownline bowrider.

I'm new to these boards and thanks in advance for your help.

Re: bottom painting question

Welcome, John.

The bottom paint will come off with paint stripper from any hardware store. It will take a few applications. The gelcoat can be restored, but it will depend on what the person who painted it did to prep the hull for painting. If they did nothing, you've got it made. If the hull was sanded beforehand, It's going to be a little more work. When you get the paint off, let us know whay you find. Also, try to post some pictures.........we love pictures.
