Bottom Painting Still Necessary or Let Go Of it?

I bought the boat with bottom paint. Since I am trailering it, there's really no justification for additional bottom paint work. But the paint is starting to show thinness and unevenness in certain spots. Must I apply fresh paint or just leave it until it wears off but itself, and maybe eventually remove it all?

Milky, It is purely a matter of the "looks" of the boat. If it looks OK to you, leave it alone. If it doesn't look OK, either paint it or sand it all off.

PS. after you sand it off, the bottom may still not look too good due to residual paint or staining, primer ets. You can then paint it with a two-part polyurethane pint to make it look good.

My main concern is: if the hull had been sanded several years ago to prepare for the paint, would the sanding made the fiberglass more porous and therefore unprotected without a feash coat?

If not a concern, I will just leave it alone and remove it slowly on my spare time.

if the gel coat has not been sanded through i would leave well enough alone as far as sandpaper goes

if you want to remove it i would look into gelcoat safe strippers

tommays

IMHO, Not worth the effort. Leave it alone.
