OMG! That was my first boat. Not that exact one mine was blue. For some reason mine had a Ford V8 with a Penta drive on it. I bought it from some redneck, did not know anyting about boats and who knows what he did to it. It was allot of fun and allot of learning at the same time. My deck had soft spots in it. I got the bright idea to rip the whole thing up and replace it. Very bad idea. The boat was never the same.

The boat should have two fuel tanks, one under each seat. Mine were pretty rusted on the inside. I ended up replacing them with a plastic tank on just one side. Uhmm what else do I remember about it. Like I said above look for soft spots. If the hole deck is soft than I would pass if there is just a soft spot than it may be OK but the hull on that boat is full of foam which holds water and rots the stingingers, at least that is what happened to mine. I had a bad ignition coil, when it got hot the motor would cut out. I could get it restarted but it would only run for a few moments. It would work fine when the coil was cool. I ended up replacing it and it worked fine after that. I also rebuilt the carb. After that it worked fine. Is this your first boat?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Are ya Sure it's a Merc 2 drive,..??

The motor is an ole Chevy, 'n parts are still easy to find,...

The drive might be a Problem though,... If it were an MC-1, that'd be what I'd expect...

The MC-2 I ain't so sure of,... model 1a, 1b, 'n 1c are obsolete...

What Vintage is the boat,..?? How long is it,..??

Since Mercury introduced the R/MR/Alpha 1 series in 1983, I would be hesitant to buy anything older since parts would likely be getting hard to find.

The capacity sticker is worded X number of people and total weight. The cops don't care how big they are or how much they weigh. If it says 7 people, don't have 8 people in there, unless you're feeling lucky.

You might consider looking for a good used "deck" style boat. They will pull tubers/skiers just as well as a runabout, and have capacities starting at around 10 people.

As a sample, this one's an 1986. 22184241_1X.JPG

This one's a 1987. 2052mje_27.jpg

As long as they have Mercruiser stern drive (not OMC) or outboard power, you're in business.

Just a note. The upper picture is basically a very large flat bottomed boat. Expect it to ride rough in some rougher waters and even with a curtain you have to be aware of waves over the bow. Knowing your boat and how to use it against the opposition (waves) helps significantly. They were extremely popular around here in the period.

On the BIA sticker, might do you to go to the BIA site and ask the question. I think I would because I agree with you, be it moving around or just dead weight, a 6 year old and my 6'5" 250# just aren't the same enchilada as we say down "heah" in TX.

Sweet looking boat. I can't speak to the drive, but those older glastrons had nothing but spray paint on the plywood to protect it. I would be very surprised if that boat didn't have some rot somewhere.

My 78 glastron didn't have a person limit on the plate, it just had a weight limit. I doubt that one is any different.

im gonna have my boat guy pull the drive off, mc1 btw, check gimbal, bellows (?) and give er a good go thru, maybe a new water pump for good measure? any thing else?

I think there are lubrication requirements when you do what you said your boat guy is going to do. Seems the gymbal bearing requires periodic lubrication as maybe the CV joint on the shaft that connects the OD to the engine.
