Bought a boat: it started as a jonboat, then grew...

Hi folks. New to this board, and I've found much good info. Glad to find it.
Well, I just bought a boat. I was thinking about getting a jonboat - something easy to tow with small car, just to get on the lake/river to fish with. But I wanted to take my daughters (9 and 12) so it'll have to be a good-sized jonboat. And I'll want girlfriend come with me, but she doesn't care to fish all that much, but likes being on the water... so I looked a little further. Fifteen years ago I had a 17' I/O, it was fun but crowded and not a good fishing boat (sold it @ birth of 1st daughter). I wanted something a little more fishing-oriented this time. After looking for a couple months... found & purchased a 1988 Dixie 171, w/115hp Merc. It's a sort of fish-n-ski design, and was by far the nicest boat I looked at it this price range (craigslist find). I looked at some from early 2000 boats that were in worse shape - esp a Scout that I wanted but was just beat - seemed that they were never as nice as pics & description indicated
.
We've had it out a couple times, great fun. Much better fishing layout than the I/O, and prob has MORE space on it. It does have an intermittent problem where it is weak for the first fifteen minutes or so or running - it'll barely turn 4000rpm, mid/lows 30mph speed - but then something kicks in and it leaps to 5700 or so and just a little shy of 50mph indicated, and runs fine rest of the day. Huge difference in smoothness, too. I'm guessing spark? I'll post query in the Merc outboard section, but if anyone has a quick fix, let me know!

the girls are just tickled, and I am, too... this will generate memories they'll never forget. I've got those memories with my Dad, and the girls will have some to. Now, just to sort out this spark (?) problem...

CantSwim - we're in Wake Forest. Heading out to Fall Lake now. Started it in the drive, and it's hitting on all six. I removed the foil/wingy thing on low unit, to see how it does without (since it was designed without it)

You most likely have a carb issue like a sticking float... DON'T use the boat again until you find/fix it... you COULD end up running lean and destroy your engine in short order

Tell me what you did or what you fed it. I would not mind my Jon boat morphing into something like that.

Seriously, I bet you guys have a grand old time and enjoy everyone one them

Well, went out today. Ran weak for a few minutes, then everything clicked and smoothed out. I think it might have planed a little quicker with the wing, but I don't really know. Best speed was 49 on GPS (and it turns out the speedo is VERY accurate from 25 on up).

at any time, those few minutes COULD be the last few it ever runs

thanks for the warning, smokeonthewater. I don't want to break it. Looking for a manual and deciding whether I want to tackle it. Here, in detail, are the symptoms I'm getting:

1. Starts alright, though a little hesitant (I pump primer bulb until tight, turn on ignition, hold prime for 10 seconds, raise throttle, then crank & start)

2. Upon pulling away from dock it runs a little rough, but doesn?t die if I?ve let it idle for a couple minutes first

3. Past no wake ? nail it ? it?s slow to plane. Cannot get on plane without giving full/close to full throttle, and then it tops out at barely 4K RPM (just me in the boat)

4. Then after a few minutes ? this is inconsistent - gets better and smoother, and will turn around 5k

5. Then, few minutes later, it completely clears and leaps forward, very smooth, VASTLY more responsive ? I can pull way back to part throttle and maintain mid-30s at around 4000rpm, with great acceleration from that point. At full throttle it?ll turn about 5800-5900 rpm and hit 49mph on speedo & GPS (speedo is apparently accurate). After this, it runs fine for the rest of the trip. After clearing up, it?ll jump onto plane VERY quickly, and is very responsive. Huge diff.

I?ve had it out three times. Second time, before going, I started it in the driveway, and sprayed some seafoam into carbs. Spraying into #2/middle carb had no effect - engine did not stumble as it did when spraying into the other two carbs (and I sprayed a LOT). I went around behind motor and yanked plug wire from #3, no effect on engine. Did same to nos. 2 and 5 and got zapped each time, and motor ran rougher, as expected. Took it out to the lake? ran crappy for first ten fifteen minutes, then woke up and ran fine rest of the trip.

Next day - pulled plugs. They all look about the same. Started in driveway before leaving & checked spark with spare plug on each cylinder while engine running, and to my satisfaction it had spark in all six. Took it to the lake, thinking it magically cured? and at first it ran crappy, as related above. After a few minutes it cleared up and ran fine. I?m stumped. Intermittent spark? What to replace? Or should I just disconnect/reconnect every wire, making sure they?ve all got good contact? Or carb/float problem?

I?ll be grateful for any guidance...

post up in the mercury section with your engine questions... they'll likely get you fixed up

EDIT: I see you already have a thread there... best of luck

Wow, that thing is cherry! I really like the way it's laid out; good use of space. I especially like the smiling crew. That's why we spend countless hours and dollars on just about the worst financial decision I guy could probably ever make. Good luck with the fuel issue and welcome aboard.

Agree, that is a sweet looking boat. Best o luck in your trouble shooting. Too me it also sounds like a carb issue more so than an ignition problem.

Follow-up: turns out it was spark, a failing switchbox. I went the prudent (or paranoid?) route and replaced both. Shop wanted nearly $700 to replace boxes; I picked up a couple new ones off ebay for 200 total and put them in yesterday. Nice and smooth now, easier starting, better idle, all-around much improved. I think the engine is fine. Plus, that big tall Merc just looks cool...

Congratulations on a sharp looking boat that is now running great and has a great crew to man, er, woman it.
