Hey im back again. I bought this motor to hopefully replace the one that left me stranded on the lake on fathers day. My question is what should i check and replace on this motor. I checked the compression and all five are sittin close to 120. The motor has not been in the water for a year according to gentlemen i bought it from so i will just assume that it has sat for a few years. I bought this motor a 1989 cobra 18 ft. fish and ski and trailer for $650.00. Hopefully i made a good deal. The motor does run but is not easy to get started and leaks gas from middle carb. Could someone give me a check list to run down with this motor before i put it in the water. I dont want a repeat of fathers day. And i am not positive of the year cause the tag on the transom bracket is wore out. The only numbers i can find are 694866 on the leaft side of block if you are looking at the spark plugs.

694866 means nothing.Check for spark.
Check the oil in the lower.
Water in the gas.Rebuild/clean carbs. Most don't need parts just a good cleaning.
Rebuild the fuel pump.
Replace all the hoses and remove any inline connectors.
Profile?Fresh or salt?
Be careful to remove the drain and not the shift pin,VERY IMPORTANT!!!

well the boat is an 89 and the motor matches the boat. I am considering using the boat it is on. It is in good shape and seems to have more space than the formula. I have good spark, good compression, and i had a brand new starter already from the chrysler 105 that is broken now. One of the carbs has no gasket on it, just pours out gas. I will put new gaskets in them all, one is a shotty self made gasket. I will rebuild fuel pump, drain gas tank, and install new hose. The motor was salt at some point but last owner only used in fresh so minor surface rust on motor not bad. I will only use in fresh water i dont do salt. Should i repaint motor?

Probably can't find original paint but black always looks good.

I have finally got everything done on the checklist. My concern is that when i put the motor up all the way it drains gas out of the carb. Is this normal and if not how do i fix? Thanks
