I just bought a Johnson 50esl71s Bowrider & I've never owned a boat before. The seller told me he had a mechanic check it out and everything was fine. I don't even know how to start it. What should I check before I try it on the water? Can I test the motor in my driveway? Any help would be apprieciated.

Do you have any friends, relatives, or co-workers that are familiar with boats?
Try to get help from a seasoned boater. There are a lot of things to learn and be shown. Much more involved than a modern car.
The motor can be started in the driveway, but it must use a garden hose adapter or have the lower unit submerged in a barrel of water.

Finding a good marine shop should also be on the list of things to do. Many will walk you through everything and can suggest things to check. Talk to other boaters in your area and ask who they trust for good service and get to know that shop very well. Here in Canada one has to obtain a boaters license which teaches all the basics and some similar course is likely available where you are. Do you know what it has for an engine?
