so i just picked up a 91 Rinker Captiva 186 with a 4.3 mercruiser Alpha 1

It has a re manufactured Jasper crate engine with new exhaust manifolds and the whole 9 yards.

got it for 1500 less than the guy was asking for it... have a few questions...

I want to install a 12v cig lighter style outlet so i can use my 12v wetvac at the marina...what would be a good circuit to tap into or should i run it right to the battery.

Also I need to install a new hydrolic trim solenoid. It goes down fine but in order to raise the trim i have to jump the solenoid with a screwdriver...I'm good with working on things i've done engine swaps in cars and whatnot so I assume its an easy job but just wondering how hard from someone who's done one.

Also the power steering seems like it is not working at all...i did notice at startup a belt would squeak a little and then go away. I will probably replace both belts but i think that is unrelated...probably needs a new power steering pump? suggestions are welcomed...

I'm sure i will have more questions in the near future...this is my 3rd boat so i do know some things but this is my first I/O

first was a 14 foot alum fishing boat with 15hp
and 2nd was bayliner 15 foot with johnson 50hp

Thanks guys!

As I?m sure you know, most boat fuse panels will have an accessory circuit that would provide a ?protected? or fused lead to tap. I?d check to see if other accessories are powered by the curcuit by pulling the fuse to see what quits. A wet vac is gonna draw pretty good amps, likely over 10. My accessory circuit has a 10A fuse that won?t carry my tube inflator. I ended up cutting the adapter off the inflator cord and wiring battery clips to attach directly to the battery rather than trying to beef up the circuit or putting a 15A fuse in the circuit. Of course you could always wire the outlet directly to the battery with appropriate fuse protection. Personally, I always try to avoid doing this because I just prefer to run everything thru the master panel, and also, then there would be a circuit that my master on/off switch will not disable.

Nice lines on the Captiva and the interior looks pretty good. Buff the oxidation out of that gelcoat and it'd look like new.

If you can jump the trim solenoid with a screwdriver, why would you replace it before you actually tested it. Apply 12V to it using a jumper cable. If it works, you have switch or wiring problem not a solenoid problem.

As for the power steering, did you check to see if the fluid level is where it needs to be. Are there signs of leakage? If the belts are squeaking, check them and tighten them or replace them if bad.

A DC accessory outlet needs to be wired and fused for the maximum amount of current that will be drawn from it. Wire it to the fuse panel.

When i hit the trim down button on the throttle it works perfect. when i hit the trim down button i get nothing. when i hit the trailer button to bring it up i can hear it click in the back at the trim motor and solenoid. this is why i believe the solenoid is bad.

How else would i go about testing it? Just jump 12v to the nut on the solenoid? does one connection make it go up and the other go down? i was just jumping the two nuts with a screwdriver and it worked somehow...
