Hey guys, I have a 2003 Maxum 2400 sport cuddy. It has a 260 hp Merc MPI with alpha drive, the boats weight is around 4500lbs.

I previously had a 3 blade 14.25 x 21 pitch on its and I was pretty happy all around with the prop. with my wife and I it would take a few seconds to plain, my max rpm's was about 4800 and top speed was about 42 mph. however when we had 4 people on board it would take 3 times as long to plain and we would lose plane at a slower speed than normal.

I decided to try out a 4 blade prop because I had fantastic results with them on my outboard before. So I went and bought a 14" x 19 pitch 4 blade prop. I knew the lower pitch and smaller diameter would increase rpm's however the extra blade would reduce some of the rpm's. When I test drove the prop the hole shot seemed to take couple seconds longer and my max rpms were 4500 at about 42 mph. The handling was fantastic. Since I was not impressed with the hole shot I decide to try the next available 4 blade at west marine.

So I bought a 4 blade 13" x 18 Pitch. I was concerned since it was a much smaller diameter and reduction in pitch. When I test drove the prop the hole shot was much faster from my 3 blade by a few seconds, my max rpms were 4800 ish with a top speed of 42 mph too.

I think I have decided to stick with the 13 x 18 since the hole shot is significant and I didn?t notice a much of a difference in top speed. I can also stay on a plan at a much lower rpm. Should I be concerned about the max rpms? I do not plan on riding at max rpm's ever. My results were not as significant as I had expected (I noticed several mph, rpms and hole shot when I went to a 4 blade with an outboard I had) what do you guys think?

If your MPI is the 5.0 L then the recommended max RPM is 4600-5000 so you should be fine. My experience is that the larger the boat the less impact a prop change has compared to a smaller boat.
