so I have a 1991 johnson 140hp VJ140TLEID. I bought two new thermostats. It looks like the thermostat screws into the diaphram. Is that right? The thermostats are plastic and have a threaded end and the diaphram gasket also has threads. It all fits together so I'm assuming yes.

Alright well I put them in. It's still not running hot enough. It comes out of quick start mode after 10 minutes or so but it's only running 95 degrees at idle. Both threads on each thermostat were busted off.

What is 95deg. Your water temp guage? I'd get a ir thermometer and measure temp at heads (hottest spot) for more accurate measurement and reference
10 min should be plenty I,m thinking. New thrms might be normal old ones ran hot if that makes sense

That is right before each head measured with an infrared thermometer. The temp gauge on the dash stays at the very bottom. Kinda irritated I spent 81 dollars and it still does the same thing. If it's not the therms then what is it?

water flowing too freely but that is usually therms. I'd have to see on that motor but crossflows have water deflectors in them in the water jacket between cyl walls. They are designed to restict some of the water flow and force it around cyls

Start a new thred titled something like "140 hp not warming up to operating temp" ans see what kind of responses you get

One of the keys to get that engine running at correct idle temp is the water pump condition and the adjustment of the valve controlling the pressure on the thermostat membranes. The link and synch must be performed according to the book, no short-cuts!!

I have one of those seloc repair manuals but it really doesn't give very detailed info on the thermostats or anything like that. Is adjusting the water control valve something I can do myself? If not then how long would it take for a dealer to adjust this?
