My brother gave me an Evinrude 9.9 4 stroke, 96 vintage, excellently kept motor; he and I fished with it many times. Always started beautifully on at least second pull. Had it serviced and I know it worked before I took it home. I put it in the back of my van (on its back, not the side) and drove home (about 500 miles). Put it on my boat (wow, those four strokes are heavy), went to the lake and tried to start it. It was locked solid, pull start won't budge. Yes, I put it in neutral before I tried to pull start it. A little oil has leaked out (maybe five teaspoons), but the oil gauge shows full. What's going on?
Thanks for any help you might give me.

Try taking the spark plugs out and pulling it over a few times. When you transported it oil may have leaked into the cylinders. If this happened you may have to pull it quite a few times to get rid of the oil. Also, dry the plugs off and then reinstall and try to crank. The motor will smoke a lot until the oil burns off. If it won't crank it may have leaked into the carbs and you will have to take the bowls off and clean them out. I hope you get it running!!!

Thanks very much for your quick and helpful reply! I'll try that tomorrow and with any luck I'll be on the lake in a couple of days. The bass are on the move!

Oh, forgot to ask. After I get the oil out I assume I will need to have the motor in the water to start it, right?
Thanks again.

Re: bout snapped my arm

When you pull the plugs I think it is ok to pull the roap a couple of times to see if it turns over ok. I would also recheck the oil level. When you put plugs back in then need to get water to water pump. The water pump is rubber but rubs on metal and if motor starts the rubber water pump will start to melt and wear off right away. If you do not want to take it to lake you can get the ear muff that hook to the hose, or put the unit down in a garbage can and fill with water to until 4 inches over cavitation plate. at that point should be ok to start. What was wrong with motor that required service???

Thanks for your help!

Nothing was wrong with the motor, my brother is just a little obsessive and took it to a shop each year for maintenance.
