got my little 84 8hp tiller. ran decent last year. has a problem idling now. already cleaned the carb. i see i have oil or something coming out from under the flywheel. since i have only had this motor for a year and a half and dont know what has been done to it i figured its time for a complete tear down so i can feel comfortable this summer.

are there any tips for a tear down and rebuild? things that i should replace while its opened? ill prob need crank bearings. im guessing ill replace the reeds as well.

thanks in advance.

Reeds almost never fail. Don't waste your time and money. Replace what's needed!

Oil under the flywheel sounds like a bad seal and will cause idle issues for sure. You won't need to tear anything apart to replace the seal, why spend money if you don't have to.

Not sure, 7/16ths? My manual calls for special omc puller tool or equivalent yadda yadda yadda. Someone else will probably advise

The tear down is the easy part, it's the putting it back together and making it run that's tough. Have you done an outboard motor before?

they were 1/4 inch bolts. i got the flywheel off and removed the stator plate on the top. there was a bunch of oil gunked up in there so the seal is gone. how to i get to the bottom seal. looks like there is 6 screws holding the motor down. if i remove them will it just pull right up? im guessing the shaft for the prop is just splined???

and yes, this is my first boat motor but i have done a few 2 stroke dirtbike motors in the past.

Yes the drive shaft is splined and should pull right out. Unless it has corroded and seized onto the crankshaft. You may need to disconnect the shift lever as well, not sure the steps on this model. You should really get a service manual for this motor if you are taking it apart this far. You need the torque specs for putting it back together properly.

Put a machine screw a couple of threads into the seal and pull up with a pair of pliers, just don't damage the bearing underneath.
