Currently, I have this type of bow light:

Is there an advantage to that type of light versus this type?

Im thinking of switching to the smaller light as it seems like the kind that I have has no benefit and only requires extra effort to not lose the light and to install it when it is needed.

Re: Bow light question

Well, I don't know. The light on the stanchion sits higher and will be more visible, especially in choppy conditions or if you have a good swell.

That could make a big difference. On the other hand, if you don't boat in rough water at night, I can't see the benefit.

But what do I know? I don't boat at night, so lights are not much use to me.

Good point-- however, (like you mentioned) its a small 17 glastron that is limited to the bay and smaller lakes...

Re: Bow light question

The light on the stalk is intended to place the light above a stowed, bow mounted trolling motor. If you don't have a retractable trolling motor on the bow then the flush mount light will do fine.

If you've got a bunch of deck gear around where you would mount the light, you won't be able to use #2. It's got to be visible from all forward angles.

Otherwise, it's up to you. I like the #2 because it makes for a less cluttered deck.

EDIT: rayjay said pretty much the same thing. :)

Also, those removable ones will get corrosion in the plug and stop working. :(

Re: Bow light question

Thanks for the info guys-- the boat is setup so that you can hook up a trolling motor in front--exactly as mentioned. Since I dont have a trolling motor and dont plan on getting one, I guess I can pick and choose.

Also, monoshock-- the one I currently have has three lights, standard red and green and a small light to light the bow up (not for navigation, but for interior light). The connections for the smaller light have corroded and it doesnt work so well anymore.

My main issue is the existing screw holes-- are they standard so I can replace it using the same holes or would I need to drill some myself? In that latter case, Id have to be sure to get one big enough to cover the previous holes...

Re: Bow light question

The screw holes aren't standard. I had to replace my combination bow light last year and the holes didn't match up. I put some 3M 5200 in the old holes and drilled new ones - easy.
As for the removable poles getting corroded...I've got three years of salt water boating on my second one with no signs of corrosion. I didn't have a corrosion problem with the first one, either, but I lost it (vibrated loose and fell off) after fifve years.

A dab of dielectric grease on the contacts will go a long way in preventing corrosion.

Re: Bow light question

I don't like the "pole" type as inexperienced friends that you may have along will instinctively consider it a handle and may snap it off. I have had that problem when people board from the swim step in the rear with the anchor light. It just sits there waiting for somebody to pull themselves up with it . . . Less likely on the bow, but I could see somebody grabbing it to help pull the boat onto the trailer or secure it around a dock. My .02
